Strychnine
The federal government has approved the emergency use of 2% Liquid Strychnine for farmers in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
In response, Vulcan County has confirmed it will be able to dispense the product to qualified producers once it becomes available.
AVAILABILITY
Supply will be extremely limited. Product availability in the Vulcan County is anticipated in July.
TRAINING
User training for 2% Liquid Strychnine is now available.
Access to the Strychnine Stewardship Training for the 2026 season is available from May 4 to August 1, 2026.
Producer Training takes around 1 hour to complete and the certificate is valid for this season (Expires: 2026-09-01).

Q: How much does one bottle treat?
A: One kg of grain treated with a 250mL bottle treats appr. 1 acre
Q: How long will farmers be able to use this substance?
A: The Emergency Use Registration is effective until November 1, 2027. After this date all unused product must be returned to the municipality.

Q: Who can purchase and apply 2% Liquid Strychnine?
A: Label statement: “Only to be used by certified pest control operators, farmers, and persons authorized in government approved pest control programs.”
- Someone who qualifies as a “farmer” (commercial agriculturalist) must provide two of the following:
- Purchaser’s confirmed legal land description
- Alberta Farm Fuel Benefit number
- Other information to verify
- Users must meet the above criteria. Acreage owners do not fall under the category of farmers and cannot be dispensed 2% Liquid Strychnine.
- Only a landowner or legally recognized operator (i.e. leaseholder or renter with a written agreement) may purchase and apply the product. Proxys are not permitted. The release of 2% Liquid Strychnine to persons that claim to represent trained applicators is prohibited.
- Hired hands or farm employees that are certified pesticide applicators under the EPEA are permitted to apply strychnine, if they complete the training.
- Family members wishing to apply Strychnine must be listed on the land title, lease, or rental agreement. Being a family member alone does not qualify them. To be eligible to apply this product, a family member not on the title must be a certified pesticide applicator under the EPEA.
Q: Where does a producer purchase 2% Liquid Strychnine if they farm in multiple municipalities?
A: Producers must identify one municipality (typically their home quarter) from which they will purchase. They may apply product on eligible land in other approved areas.
Q: Is there a limit to how much a producer can purchase?
A: Yes, applicants are limited to a maximum purchase of two cases, dependent on availability
Q: When is the application window?
A: Use is only permitted during early spring (March 1 – June 15) before national vegetation has emerged and in late summer (July 15 – September 1) after vegetation has died down. Spring is the best time to apply Strychnine.
Q: Do farmers need to post signage when treating a RGS colony?
A: Yes, signage must be posted at all treatment sites. Signs can be obtained from the municipality where they purchased 2% Liquid Strychnine.
Q: Who conducts audits or inspections?
A: Random or targeted audits may be conducted by the Government of Alberta officials or directed representatives. The Pesticides Regulatory Directorate (formerly PMRA) may also conduct audits.
