UPDATE: HWY 23 RE-OPENED – Nov 28 5:00am

UPDATE: NEW DETOUR FOR HWY 23 – Nov 27 3:50pm

Traffic is being detoured east of Champion to accommodate the train derailment response. See attached picture for the updated detour map. This detour will be in effect until further notice.

Hwy 529 in both directions is open.

HWY 23 DETOUR – NORTH OF CHAMPION

Emergency Services are closing Hwy 23 around the derailment scene.

NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC: head east on Township Road 150 to Range Road 233 (north) to Township Road 154 (west) to connect back on Highway 23. See Image.

SOUTHBOUND TRAFFIC: head west on Township Road 154 to Range Road 244 (south) to Township Road 150 (east) to connect back to Highway 23. See Image.

Train Derailment – North of Champion

Update: November 27, 2025 12:40pm

A train carrying non-hazardous material has derailed north of Champion, blocking Highway 529. No evacuation is required. DETOUR IN EFFECT. Access to Champion is still open from Highway 23 and from Highway 529.

DETOUR:

– motorists are advised to detour south of Champion

– westbound detour – go south at Range Road 233 to Township Road 150, then connect back to Highway 23

– eastbound detour- go south on Highway 23 to Township Road

150, and then take Range Road 233
