WEATHER ALERT – Significant Rainfall Expected June 20-21

With significant rainfall expected in our region, Vulcan County is urging all residents to remain alert and take appropriate precautions to remain safe and protect their property during the anticipated weather event.

Potential Hazards During Heavy Rainfall:

  • Localized Flooding: Low lying areas, roadways, and ditches may flood quickly. Avoid driving through standing and moving water.
  • Erosion and Washouts: Road shoulders, driveways, slopes, and river/creek banks may become unstable.
  • Reduced Visibility and Hydroplaning: Driving conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Be sure to use caution and reduce speed when necessary.
  • Overloaded Drainage Systems: Stormwater systems may back up, causing water pooling.
  • Private Septic Systems: High groundwater levels can impact private septic system operations.

Safety Tips:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor weather alerts from Environment Canada and other local news sources.
  • Obey Road Closures: Never drive around barricades, or through water covered roads.
  • Walking Through Water: Standing water may be deeper than it appears and can hide unknown objects or debris. Flowing water can knock you off your feet, so stay clear of flowing streams and ditches.
  • Prepare Your Property: Clear debris from gutters, downspouts, and drainage pathways.
  • Check on Neighbors: Check on those who are elderly or have limited mobility.
  • Report Issues: Notify the County of any blocked culverts, flooded roadways, or unsafe conditions.

We encourage all residents to be prepared and take necessary steps to protect their property.

County crews are monitoring conditions and will respond to hazards as needed.

Report all non-emergency concerns (blocked culverts, flooded roadways, or unsafe conditions) to (403) 423-0057.
